With autumn now firmly here it gets you thinking of real cosy food. This is a little troublesome for our family due to the complexity of the children’s diets.
One thing they all currently love is a good home made spaghetti bolognaise. I take this as an opportunity to hide some much needed veggies in their diet. I have recently invested in a slow cooker and love the ease of making a meal with them. Myself and Dave have been having some yummy chunky soups.
This got me thinking about the possibility of breadmakers. Another thing the children love is bread and it’s another option of getting some hidden goodness into them. You can add seeds, nuts, bananas and lots of other fruits to bread to make it taste delicious.
With Halloween almost here I was thinking of using the seeds out of our pumpkin, we normally just throw them away but after a bit of searching I have found lots of yummy recipes that I can use to make use of them. I know the children wont eat them but I though maybe I could toast them and them cover them in chocolate? An incognito autumn treat!
The cold dark nights drawing in is the perfect excuse for a nice hearty stew. Our favourite is a beef stew but the children won’t touch it! Which is a shame as I could throw lots of vegetables inside. What I tend to do is make a big pot full and freeze the excess for nights I don’t fancy cooking at all. You can add some lovely chunky dumplings or even some home made crusty bread to finish off the meal. If your like my Dave all you need to add is a nice dollop of pickled beetroot! Definitely not for me that one, I much prefer a nice piece of bread and butter
Then there is always the good old fashion roast, which doesn’t have to be saved for Sunday. We love a good midweek roast and it’s another of the few meals that we all enjoy as a whole family.
What are your favourite autumn meals?
